Structural Gable Design in Macclesfield

Project Overview WHL Surveying & Engineering was commissioned to assess and design replacements for rotten beams in the structural gables of a detached bungalow in Macclesfield. The project aimed to address the deterioration while ensuring long-term durability and preserving the building’s aesthetic.

Scope of Work Our team conducted a thorough inspection of both structural gables and identified significant rot in the existing beams. We designed a solution that involved replacing the damaged beams with galvanized steel, clad in timber to match the original appearance and comply with planning requirements.

Challenges and Solutions The main challenge was designing a solution that combined structural integrity with visual harmony. To achieve this, we:

  • Selected galvanized steel for its strength and resistance to future deterioration.

  • Designed timber cladding to seamlessly replicate the original aesthetic of the gables.

  • Ensured the new design complied with all relevant structural and planning regulations.

Outcome The new gable designs successfully replaced the compromised beams, restoring the structural integrity of the bungalow while maintaining its traditional appearance. The use of galvanized steel ensures longevity, reducing the likelihood of future issues.
